Nutritional Supplement Buying Guide

For People with Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes

PRODUCT TYPES: YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THE TYPES OF NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS AVAILABLE

There are many products on the market that are offered to people who have a concerning regarding diabetes or pre-diabetes.  These product formulas can be very different.  You need to be knowledgeable about what types of products are available.

Generally, they fall into several categories:

  1. Single Ingredient – such as chromium or cinammon
  2. Herbal combinations – such as gymnema, banaba, etc…..
  3. Herbal combinations with limited vitamins and/or minerals – a mixture of herbs and a limited amount of vitamins or minerals
  4. “All-In-One” nutrition support of multi-vitamins, minerals, antioxidants & herbal formula – a complete multi-vitamin including minerals and antioxidants plus a herbal blend formula

DOSAGE & QUALITY: YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THE DOSAGE OF THE INGREDIENTS AND THE QUALITY OF PRODUCT

READ THE LABEL!!!  Whether you are in a store or online, read the Supplement Facts label.  It tells you what is in the product and the dosage of the ingredients.

2 different products may both contain similar ingredients but at widely varying dosage amounts.  As an example, Alpha Lipoic Acid is a common antioxidant ingredient in nutritional supplements marketed to people with diabetes.  The dosage in different products may vary from 50mg to 300mg.  Know what you are buying.

It is also important to know the quality of the manufacturer.  Do they adhere to the FDA’s GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) Standards?  Is it made in the U.S.A. or a foreign country?  If you are not sure, ask the manufacturer.  Call or email them.  If they do not respond, look for another product that meets your needs.

BEWARE OF FALSE OR MISLEADING CLAIMS

There are very specific laws regarding how a nutritional supplement product can be described and promoted.  It is against the law to suggest that a nutritional supplement can cure diabetes.  Beware of companies whose advertising suggests that their product is a miracle cure.  Use your common sense.

There has been extensive clinical research conducted on many of the ingredients that may affect blood sugar levels.  But a company must not selectively use this information to mislead consumers as to the effectiveness of their product.

PRODUCT QUALITY: CHOOSE THE HIGHEST QUALITY PRODUCT AVAILABLE THAT MEETS YOUR NEEDS

Quality is a combination of many things, not just the ingredients or price.  We all know that overpaying for a product doesn’t make it better.

Compare supplement product ingredients, dosages of the ingredients, the manufacturing standards and the cost of product.  Be an informed consumer!!
